Family Day “Towards Spring: A Workshop on Urban Pollinators” by the Center for the Promotion of Science at the Museum of Science and Technology in Belgrade

On 19 February, the Center for the Promotion of Science organized a Family Day “Towards Spring: A Workshop on Urban Pollinators” at the Museum of Science and Technology in Belgrade, bringing together children, parents, and members of the public interested in learning about the importance of pollinators in urban environments.

The aim of the educational event was to raise awareness of the role pollinators play in urban ecosystems and to offer practical guidance on how individuals can contribute to their protection.

During the programme, representatives of the organization Ekonaut introduced visitors to plant species that best support pollinators in cities, explaining what can be grown on balconies, in courtyards, or gardens, and how to care for these plants. Participants received seedlings and starter seeds to take home and apply what they had learned in practice.

Representatives of BeeCenter spoke about the diversity and importance of bee products, presenting different types of honey—including locally produced Belgrade honey—and explaining how these products are created and why they matter for both people and nature.

Through educational materials and interactive activities, attendees explored the diversity of bee species in Serbia, learned how to recognize different pollinators, and tested their knowledge on site. The workshop was designed for all generations, offering families an opportunity to discover the world of pollinators together and learn concrete steps that support biodiversity conservation.

Visitors also had access to two guides on urban pollinators and honeybees prepared by the Center for the Promotion of Science, which are available for free download and everyday use.

Citizens and community members often feel like they don’t have much control over the decisions that get made by governments and even more so in issues like climate. However, research shows high levels of concern about the climate crisis and a willingness on the part of individuals to contribute to climate action.
