Portugal (Archipelago of the Azores) Biodiversity protection
BACKGROUND
From microscopic organisms to mega forests, biodiversity encompasses all the different forms of life found on Earth.
It plays a crucial role in shaping our food sources, soil health, water systems, weather patterns, and even the quality of the air we inhale, being also a crucial natural defence against climate change.
Conserving and restoring natural environments, and the biodiversity they contain is essential for absorbing large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate impacts. The pristine natural ecosystems of the Azores archipelago together with the expertise of Expolab – Centro Ciência Viva in life sciences make the Portuguese Learning Venture a unique opportunity to increase the science literacy of the public.
The Portuguese Learning Venture will work with people of different ages and backgrounds to grow their understanding of the local ecosystems and the importance of their protection.
MISSION AND VISION
The Portuguese Learning Venture believes that science education provides opportunities for learners to develop and utilize transformative agency to effect change on local and global environments. Using an open, collaborative, transdisciplinary and lifelong learning approach to science education, we want to implement new ways of taking meaningful action towards climate justice, believing in social progress based on the engagement of all citizens.
Through science literacy programmes which focus on behavioural change and decision-making, local communities are supported to rethink the local use of land and consider how giving a precedence to biodiversity preservation could have greater value.
