What to Expect

On March 11th, the Irish Sustainability Schools Network (ISSN) invites educators in Ireland to an interactive online workshop led by Dr Mairéad Hurley, Assistant Professor in Science & Society Education, Trinity College Dublin, and LEVERS Principal Investigator.

This workshop marks the start of an exciting research partnership between the LEVERS project and the ISSN, through which we will explore innovative whole-school approaches to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Together, we’ll co-design evidence-based recommendations for effective multi-stakeholder partnerships to drive real change in Irish schools.

We’ll kickstart the “vision” phase of our project using a systemic design approach. Through collaboration and discussion, participants will:
🌟 Define a Guiding Star – our long-term vision for sustainability and climate change education in Ireland
⭐ Identify a Near Star – tangible outcomes we aim to achieve in the next year through this partnership, taking a meaningful step toward our guiding star.

Why Join?

Help shape the national conversation by sharing insights on sustainability and climate action in your school/organisation.
Collaborate in small breakout groups to explore the system and to speculate about possible and preferable futures for ESD in Ireland.
Gain insights from the LEVERS project, including research from neuroscience and psychology on common barriers to climate action.
Contribute to a shared vision for ESD in Ireland and play a key role in developing practical guidelines for schools, educators, and policymakers

This is an opportunity to influence the future of sustainability and climate change education in Ireland – have your say! 🚀

Open to educators at all educational levels (including non-formal) based in Ireland, as well as collaborators from other sectors.

Cooling Down Brussels: Collaborative Solutions for Urban Heat and Social Equity

When starting LEVERS[1] , we had to pick a topic for the Brussels pilot that was interesting, appealing, and close to our hearts. We wanted to do something that would help disadvantaged groups, something that would be useful for the people of Brussels. Something that would allow us to show the benefits of co-creation. When checking the thermometer, we found that topic.

Systems Thinking & Systemic Design

Background When a challenge has multiple stakeholders and components, with complex interactions between them, it becomes difficult to plot a linear path towards a defined outcome. These kinds of challenges have been termed ‘cloud’ or ‘wicked’ problems: challenges so interdependent that there are no clear right or wrong solutions.

Humans & Climate Action: Seven Insights from Neuroscience & Psychology

The LEVERS project aims to reach diverse learners across communities by engaging them in action for climate justice. This requires tackling polarisation, and finding ways to unite those with opposing points of view around shared goals.
