LATRA × Kersnikova Institute: Twinning Climate Justice Education through FLOWGEN

Two LEVERS partners have taken bold steps in advancing climate justice through education. LATRA — an award-winning social innovation hub based in Lesvos — and Kersnikova — Slovenia’s leading centre for art, science, and technology — have built a strong, strategic partnership within the LEVERS project. United by a commitment to inclusive education, non-formal learning, and climate action, their collaboration has become a model for how cross-sector alliances can drive meaningful, place-based change.

What began as collaboration through LEVERS’ sustainability workstream and twinning initiative has grown into a dynamic, multi-layered partnership.

LATRA’s work with displaced and marginalised youth, combined with Kersnikova’s expertise in science-driven creativity and systems thinking, led to the co-creation of innovative, non-formal learning models that place young people at the heart of climate action.

This ongoing collaboration has been key to sustaining both partners’ Learning Ventures — transforming them from short-term pilots into resilient, evolving ecosystems. Twinning wasn’t just symbolic; it became a tool for peer learning, shared infrastructure, and lasting impact.

“…youth-led innovation in the blue economy and water justice…to empower young changemakers across Europe.”

Their partnership now continues through FLOWGEN, an Erasmus+ project focused on youth-led innovation in the blue economy and water justice. Drawing on their LEVERS experience, LATRA and Kersnikova are scaling their approaches to empower young changemakers across Europe.

What is FLOWGEN?

“[FLOWGEN] equips the next generation with the…skills they need to respond to…our era’s most urgent challenges: the future of water.”

FLOWGEN is an Erasmus+ project that puts young people at the forefront of Europe’s blue economy and water justice. By combining cutting-edge education with youth-led innovation, FLOWGEN equips the next generation with the digital, green, and entrepreneurial skills they need to respond to one of our era’s most urgent challenges: the future of water. Through workshops, micro-credentials, and cross-border collaborations, FLOWGEN turns awareness into action, empowering youth to design solutions that are bold, inclusive, and sustainable.

Built on strong partnerships across Greece, Slovenia, Spain, and Hungary, FLOWGEN transforms climate and sustainability education into a living, participatory movement. The project goes beyond traditional learning — creating hands-on experiences where young people can experiment, advocate, and lead. By linking communities, educators, and policymakers, FLOWGEN ensures that the voices of youth don’t just join the conversation on climate resilience and water justice — they help set the agenda for Europe’s future.

Together for climate justice.

Background When a challenge has multiple stakeholders and components, with complex interactions between them, it becomes difficult to plot a linear path towards a defined outcome. These kinds of challenges have been termed ‘cloud’ or ‘wicked’ problems: challenges so interdependent that there are no clear right or wrong solutions.
